LCOC Summer Recreation Program
Since 2012, the Summer Recreation Program has offered a six-week program of enriching, educational, and fun activities for the children in the Lubec area. The program is available for children ages 4-13 and provides a sliding fee scale which makes over 78% of the Lubec/Trescott area children eligible. A hot breakfast and lunch is provided through the USDA Summer Meals Program and on average we serve over 2500 meals in the six-week period. On any given day during the program 50 to 60 children can be found at LCOC.
The program staff includes local high school and college age persons who have been trained in working with children as well as volunteers who offer their services in many activities, some including: the arts, science and literacy, nutrition education, and physical activities.
Field trips are taken each year during the program utilizing every educational and recreational activity available in Washington County and beyond. We have visited places as close as the Downeast Institute for Applied Marine Research & Education on Beals Island to as far away as the Planetarium at UMaine in Orono. We even cross into Canada and visit places like Kings Landing in New Brunswick and the Roosevelt International Park on Campobello Island. The older children experienced other activities such as a sailing classes through a partnership with the Passamaquoddy Yacht Club. Many of the children have never been beyond Machias and we are certain these experiences helped broaden their world views.
The registration packet can be found below.
In partnership with the Bay of Fundy International Marathon we offer a mini Summer Recreation Day to support the runners. The registration packet for marathon day is below. If you have any questions please call 207-733-LCOC.
